Original Saddles |
Saddle Belt A safety belt that can be attached to the front of the saddle can be quite effective. If the rider's arm is not long enough, the strap should be lengthened from the side where it is attached to the saddle flaps on each side. This makes the belt more secure. The picture shows German rider Hanz' saddle. It is dangerous to strap a rider down to the saddle, but in Hanz' case, his legs are amputated below the knee, so it is not difficult for him to slip out if necessary. This tool should only be used for riders with similar disabilities that are able to slip out of the saddle if anything dangerous occurs.

Socket Saddle The photo shows German rider Angelica's saddle. This saddle is made so that the rider can slip their stubs into the bags attached to the saddle on each side instead of using a belt. The top of the bag is made so that the rider can strap themselves on quite securely so that they do not bounce out of the saddle when the horse starts to move forward. Angelica has achieved the Silver medal in both the Atlanta Paralympic games (1996) and at the World Championships in Denmark(1999). She has also achieved many ribbons and medals at able bodied rider competitions in Germany.

Safety Saddle This is a saddle used by an Italian rider. The secure handle put on the front is what makes this saddle unique. In the case of this rider, they are not able to sit upright, so there are small "walls" on the saddle to help them out. The walls are made of soft materials and there seems not to be much of an impact on the rider. The back side has a lower wall. The front is probably made taller so that the rider does not hit the handle directly if they lose balance, and back is lower to decrease the assistance necessary from the tool to sit upright.

Crutch Saddle This is a saddle designed and used by Ms Kitazumi who belongs to the JRAD Tohoku division. She has severe rheumatism which makes it difficult for her to keep her body upright while in the saddle. So in order to be able to ride, she came up with the idea to attach the top halves of a pair of crutches to the saddle. She puts herself upright by putting the crutches under her arms. The crutches are attached to the second belt holes on a western saddle using a strong string.

Bianca's Saddle Bianca, Germany's no.1 rider is the winner at both the Atlanta Paralympics and the World Championships in Belgium. Rings on both sides of the saddle help her to ride at her best. By putting the reins through these rings on each side, Bianca is able to ride with the horse on the bit though her arms are not very long. Bianca also uses loop reins, and she uses her mouth to adjust the length. (see "reins" for more details) The rings are also helpful then to keep the reins at the same angle.
